DC SCORES covers DC: Hearst Recreation Center, Ward 3
As DC SCORES has grown over the past several years -- from 20 schools, to adding middle schools in 2006, to 27 schools, then 42, and now to 60 sites, including several recreation centers that make up the first-ever DC City Soccer League -- we've expanded our reach across Washington, DC. And now we serve 2,200 kids in neighborhoods throughout the entire city -- meaning all eight wards. This fall, we'll bring to you a highlight program in each ward.
In Ward 3, Hearst Recreation Center is the sole DC SCORES site. Because the site is a recreation center and not a school, their programming only includes soccer.
On a typical day of DC SCORES soccer practice, Coach Alex Oshinsky comes down to the field to see his students already having a snack and ready to go. To start off practice, they'll play games such as sharks and minnows, keep away, and steal the bacon.
"You want to keep the kids moving," Alex said. "Instead of running a warm-up where the kids are standing and stretching, I'll run a dynamic warm-up."
He's found that the kids are more than happy to play these games. "They seem to take to the games a little bit more than just standing in a circle," he said.
Practice then continues for about an hour, concluding with a scrimmage. It was evident that the students were more than happy to be there. They love soccer, their team, and their coach! Keep up the good work, Hearst!

DC SCORES covers DC: KIPP AIM, Ward 8
As DC SCORES has grown over the past several years -- from 20 schools, to adding middle schools in 2006, to 27 schools, then 42, and now to 60 sites, including several recreation centers that make up the first-ever DC City Soccer League -- we've expanded our reach across Washington, DC. And now we serve 2,200 kids in neighborhoods throughout the entire city -- meaning all eight wards. This fall, we'll bring to you a highlight program in each ward.
At KIPP AIM Academy, extracurricular activities are a priority. The programming involves an incredibly enthusiastic and dedicated group of fifth- to eighth-graders.
Poetry coach and 5th grade literacy teacher Sara Gould shared a few key facts with us. Through our talk with her, we really got an insider's view of the program at KIPP AIM. Sara has an incredible relationship with the students as a DC SCORES coach because she teaches about half of the poet-athletes in her class throughout the day (common at many DC SCORES schools).
Gould said that "being someone that is in the classroom but then also teaching at SCORES is helpful to working with the students." She said that this adds a "mentor layer" and a "humanizing aspect" to the relationship, and not only does it benefit her students in DC SCORES; it benefits her students' peers as well.
"They see that our relationship is different, and they want that for themselves," Gould said. "KIPP is business in the classroom, but when you're in a less-structured, more down-to-earth environment, the kids see you as a whole person. It's an all-around relationship, not just student-teacher."
Though this is Gould's first year at KIPP AIM, she taught and coached at KIPP WILL for five years, giving her a total of six years involved with DC SCORES. She said that when she transferred schools, DC SCORES brought her comfort.
"It was nice to have something I connected with and was passionate about," Gould said.
This year's Poetry Slam! was a unique experience for KIPP AIM because this was the first Slam! that they had participated in since before any of the current students or teachers could remember. Gould described preparation for the Slam! as "stressful" because they were only able to meet for poetry once a week compared to other schools who met two or three times a week. The students "really pulled it together in just three sessions," Gould said, adding that the incredible performance that we saw on the stage during the Eastside Slam! was really attributed to the students' hard work, both in the classroom and at home after school.
"A lot of it had to do with the excitement and investment," Gould said. She added that the first day after constructing a poem, there were a few students who had already memorized their lines.
"[It] really spoke volumes to [me] about the fact that they cared about it and really wanted to work toward it."
This season of Fall SCORES at KIPP AIM, Gould's poet-athletes worked incredibly hard to overcome challenges. To overcome obstacles during their first season of doing both soccer and poetry, the students practiced treating tiny victories as if they were major, going with a strong "I'm going to get better" mindset, and taking a lot of pride in the fact that they were the first students to start poetry back up at their school.
These students set the base for DC SCORES in the upcoming years at AIM, and future poet-athletes will have this incredible group to thank!

DC SCORES covers DC: Imagine Hope Tolson, Ward 5
As DC SCORES has grown over the past several years -- from 20 schools, to adding middle schools in 2006, to 27 schools, then 42, and now to 60 sites, including several recreation centers that make up the first-ever DC City Soccer League -- we've expanded our reach across Washington, DC. And now we serve 2,200 kids in neighborhoods throughout the entire city -- meaning all eight wards. This fall, we'll bring to you a highlight program in each ward.
Last week, we went to Imagine Hope Community Charter School, Tolson Campus in Ward 5. Not only did we visit during a session of poetry programming, we also spent some time with them at Fall Frenzy and attended a special poetry workshop at DC SCORES partner Busboys and Poets! In every encounter we had with the group, each student was dedicated to working hard, while also learning and having fun. This is due in part to the incredible job that the Imagine Hope coaches do; they have made a huge impact upon these students.
Throughout soccer practice, the coaches advise their students to work constructively on the field while practicing strong sportsmanship. During poetry sessions, the coaches inspire the students to be creative and express themselves in whatever way works for them. No matter the setting, the coaches find a way to incorporate fun into the lesson! Rock-paper-scissors games are popular at Imagine Hope, too.

COACHES' CORNER
“The students have become important to me. It’s not just only my team, I keep up with their grades. I make sure that they’re still doing what they need to do in class at all times. I’m not just their coach and adviser. To me, I feel like I’m more of a mentor to them. The students come to me. They come to me for advice, they come to me if they get in trouble. I help sooth the students most of the time. DC SCORES poetry and coaching is beyond coaching. It’s a mentor program to me.” - Karen Burton, Poetry Coach
“For me, the things that I try to instill as a coach are one, they know that my biggest rule is having fun and we’re always here to have fun. Two, we’re here to work as a team, and three, you’re here to try your best and work your hardest. Those are the things that I want out of them in both poetry and in soccer.” - Coach Clemons, Soccer/poetry coach

DC SCORES Covers DC: Anne Beers Elementary, Ward 7
As DC SCORES has grown over the past several years -- from 20 schools, to adding middle schools in 2006, to 27 schools, then 42, and now to 60 sites, including several recreation centers that make up the first-ever DC City Soccer League -- we've expanded our reach across Washington, DC. And now we serve 2,200 kids in neighborhoods throughout the entire city -- meaning all eight wards. This fall, we'll bring to you a highlight program in each ward.
Last week, we visited Anne Beers Elementary School located in Ward 7 while they were in full swing preparing for the Poetry Slam!. Both the coaches and the students were equally dedicated to working as hard as they can to strive for the Golden Mic Trophy at the Poetry Slam! in mid-November.
This will be Beers' 19th Poetry Slam! -- every single one of them. Beers is one of the longest-running DC SCORES programs, having started in the year of our founding, 1994. Since then, there have been hundreds of game days, dozens of impactful service-learning projects, and thousands of original poems. Alumni of the program at Beers have come back to events. Many of spoken about the effect DC SCORES had on them while at the school.
Of all of the topics that the this fall's students had to choose from, the theme of Black Lives Matter resonated the most with them. Many kids wrote about the movement in their individual poems. The team then took parts of the solo poems to patch together the group piece. Coach Herras Howard called himself a "technician of some sort" because he stitched together the pieces of the students' poems to make the final product.
Each student had many thoughtful things to say about the matter, and their passion shined brightly. Not to tease the Poetry Slam! performance too much, but fifth-grader Nihjaia J. will likely play a large role. "I've been through a lot, me and my grandmother both," Nihjaia said of discrimination she's faced.
We can't wait to see all of your hard work pay off when the Poetry Slam! comes up, Beers!

DC SCORES Covers DC: Truesdell Education Campus, Ward 4
As DC SCORES has grown over the past several years -- from 20 schools, to adding middle schools in 2006, to 27 schools, then 42, and now to 60 sites, including several recreation centers that make up the first-ever DC City Soccer League -- we've expanded our reach across Washington, DC. And now we serve 2,200 kids in neighborhoods throughout the entire city -- meaning all eight wards. This fall, we'll bring to you a highlight program in each ward.
Last week, we visited Truesdell Education Campus located in Ward 4. Truesdell is a large campus, including about 700 kids from grades PK-8. We were lucky enough to visit Truesdell last Thursday for its elementary team's game day against Powell Elementary, and everyone around the school was buzzing with excitement.
Truesdell is a unique DC SCORES site because the school has three separate SCORES programs: Morning SCORES, Junior SCORES, and DC SCORES (both elementary and middle). Morning SCORES takes place before school starts, where students choose to come to practice soccer and get their energy out before the academic day begins. Having students attend Morning SCORES has improved attendance levels at Truesdell. DC SCORES has regular programming for grades 3-8, starting after Truesdell's mandatory extended day. DC SCORES added the middle school program in 2014 because of how popular the elementary program had become, with kids wanting to continue after fifth grade.
With such a widespread program at Truesdell -- funded through OSSE's 21st Century Community Learning Centers grant -- DC SCORES has a staff position dedicated to managing the program that's held by Will Sutton.

Charles Robinson, who is the dean of students, has worked at Truesdell for nearly two decades, and has coached DC SCORES since the beginning, on how working with the children affects him:
"I'm proud to be a member of such a great organization. I get more out of it than the children do. Just to sit back and see the community rally around the Trojans of Truesdell makes me feel good and gives me the energy to go home and be me. That's me!"
Will Sutton, DC SCORES coach and staff member, on his experience in the program:
"We teach them about leadership and sportsmanship and how they can really be good people when they grow up. We love working with these kids, and their excitement is really a testimony to what we do here at DC SCORES and what the kids really love."

Coach Carlos Granados predicts that especially soccer will increase in popularity in the school community when D.C. United's new new soccer stadium is built in the neighborhood.
The team is motivated by its coaches, and it is evident that the children hold a great deal of admiration for them. All of the coaches command a great amount of respect and do an incredible job shaping these young poet-athletes.

COACHES' CORNER
Katie Bell, a 3rd Grade ESL teacher, speaks about how having multiple languages in the learning environment can positively affect her students:
"We have a lot of students here that immigrated from other countries or who are second generation immigrants who are bilingual, so having the soccer component but also the writing component, where they are able to express themselves in English and we're encouraging them to write in Spanish as well, has been very powerful for them. I think it's a really great way for a lot of our English language learner students to build on their writing skills outside of the school day in a more fun and comfortable environment for them than the traditional academic setting might be, but it's also a place to build friendships and practice speaking English with their peers or for other students who maybe are already bilingual or grew up in the United States for them to take a leadership role. It's really cool to see how all of our students on the team have come together to identify themselves as a support system for other students regardless of their grade, regardless of how long they've been playing or writing for the team."
KID TALK
"I didn't think that poetry would be fun, but on the first day, we got to make a fun poem and students made very funny poems and we had fun laughing so I knew that the school year would be more fun with DC SCORES." - Katelynn, 9

We begin the series with a brief look at Thomson Elementary School in Ward 2. The program has grown incredibly popular under the stability of soccer coach Mark "Popsie" Lewis, an array of tremendous writing coaches, and a large and supportive community of families who travel en mass to the Tigers' games despite them all being away from the school that has no soccer field. The majority of kids in the program at Thomson continue with DC SCORES during middle school, many of them joining Popsie who also coaches soccer at Lincoln Middle School.
"They need a little bit more nurturing, a little more attention, but because of that, you get that back from the kids," said longtime soccer coach Mark "Popsie" Lewis. "The Thomson kids, I will always feel grateful to have the opportunity to coach them because they are so genuine. It really makes the coaches very appreciative of their feedback and the love that they give back.”
