Poem of the Week: Diana H., Barnard Elementary School

During the winter, we will highlight just a handful of the original poems that students wrote during the fall season and performed at the 17th Annual DC SCORES Poetry Slam! in early December. To watch any performance from the Slam!, visit our YouTube channel.

Mandala
I am a rose so pretty as can be
Like a swan so elegant and pretty
Like a flute so musical and bright
In summer so hot, and cold in the winter
So quiet and sad but happy and loud
Like fire and water, hot and cold
Never dark like a cloud, always light as the sun
Bright pink like the stars, but never dark as black

The Universe
Look up at the stars
Gaze at the moon
See Venus and Saturn
A glorious sight
Shooting stars Shine so bright
In a milky way full of good and bad
Now I am thankful for the life I have

Healthy Me
Healthy me is the best way to be!
Healthy me is strong and my bones won’t go wrong.
I eat vegetables every night
and don’t drink a fattening Sprite.
The sodium is waste and vegetables you can taste.
Healthy me is a bold cold fighter.
The more healthy food is the more you lose.
We are the teen, lean, healthy machine.
Healthy me is the best way to be!

Moth
I’ve always been jealous of a moth.
Yes.
A moth.
Because people just leave them alone.
They just let them fly on their own.

Who pays attention to that ugly thing?
But it’s the freest of creatures.
It flutters its wings
so independently
And nobody seems to care.

Poetry
Letters down your paper,
Feelings,
Expressions,
And you too.
We read them,
We write them or share them too.
You feel great,
Happy or good,
We cheer and cry but show emotions to the
end because we are a team who do our best.
But we are poetry, all together.

Courage
Courage is opportunity, take it
Courage is beautiful, appreciate it
Courage is daring, face it
Courage is like a soccer game, play it
Courage is trouble, overcome it
Courage is a battle, confront it
Courage is risky, stand up to it
We have no fear!!! We are fearless
