L'Enfant Plaza will soon be home to the International Spy Museum, and our Truesdell campers had the opportunity to check out the new site thanks to Clark Construction.

The excited campers spent the first part of their field trip hanging out with a couple of Clark employees that gave some fun facts on the new museum. The kids also learned about other notable buildings in the city that were built by Clark.

The Verizon Center, RFK Stadium, Nationals Park, the National Museum of African American History, and the list continues! All the campers were amazed to learn about all the cool projects Clark has been a part of over the years, which served as inspiration for their fun activity ahead.

Everyone's creative skills were tested with the task of designing unique museum ideas and presenting their final models.

Sports was the big theme as the majority of the groups designed soccer museums.

9-year-old Kiomara was very excited to present her group's National Soccer Museum. "It will include all the best soccer players. Messi! Ronaldo! Maradona!" said the eager camper.

There was, however, one that stood out from the rest with their innovative idea, the National Candy Museum. This concept grabbed everyone's attention, including some of the Clark employees that were big fans of the free candy bag idea.

Next up the kids received a visit from the site's superintendent, who talked to the kids about his responsibilities and what goes into building the new spy museum.

"It was great having the kids out here," said Stephanie Emore, an engineer for Clark. "For those that were here last year, it's nice for them to see how we started from nothing to a full building now."

Finally, is there any other way for DC SCORES to end a fun-filled day than with a soccer game? The Clark employees joined the kids on the field to conclude another great week of summer camp.

In a soccer field filled with elementary and middle school kids, one stood out in particular. It wasn't just his small size or his impressive touch on the ball that grabbed attention, it was his friendly smile.

First time camper Chris C., seemed right at home during the two-week soccer camp at Tubman Elementary School. By the second day of camp he made friends with pretty much every camper, coach, and volunteer on the field.

It was just a matter of time before Chris picked up a nickname from his fellow campers.

Whenever Chris was on the field you could hear his teammates yelling out "Dybala! Dybala!" This nickname came to life after noticing the similarities between Chris and his favorite soccer player, Paulo Dybala.

It wasn't surprising to see the 9 year-old practicing with the middle school boys by the third day of camp. Despite the difference in heights, Chris' skill level fit right in with the older boys.

The ease Chris has to make friends is thanks to his participation in DC SCORES at Bancroft Elementary School, which is like a second family to him. Every time someone mentions Bancroft, he speaks so fondly of all the school staff, his coach, and his teammates.

It's hard not to gravitate toward a kid that is so willing to learn and help out his fellow teammates. Chris wasn't one to hesitate to pass the ball to his friends on the field. He always had a cool head during games and was a trusted player by all.

A true leader on the field.

That's how Keith Tucker, former Howard University and Bermuda National team head coach, describes Chris. "He's the kind of guy you want on your team. The kind that brings the best out of his teammates," said Tucker.

This was Chris' first time at a DC SCORES summer camp, but it definitely won't be his last thanks to all the fun memories he made with his new friends and coaches.

Over the course of two weeks, kids from all over Washington D.C. got together at Tubman Elementary School for one of three DC SCORES summer camps.

The Tubman Toads' soccer field hosted new campers and coaches, as well as returning participants that love being a part of summer SCORES. During four hours every day, kids had the opportunity to meet new people, practice and improve their soccer skills, and most importantly, have fun.

Throughout the first week of camp, the drills focused on ball control and the skill quality improved every day. It was incredible to see how the kids grew more and more comfortable during games and with their teammates during camp. The level of play within every level increased thanks to the support of the camp coaches.

As much as the campers enjoyed the drills, there was no denying the huge smiles on their faces when they played scrimmages with each other.

From the middle school kids with the most experience to the rising third graders that have never touched a ball before, the amount of support shown throughout the two weeks was incredible to witness. As the team bonds grew stronger, the last couple days of camp had a sense of nostalgia. For many kids in the city, this soccer camp was the highlight of their summer, and it was soon coming to an end.

Following tradition, the last day of camp consisted of a BBQ for the whole community where campers, coaches, staff, and families had the opportunity to come together to celebrate another successful camp.

The campers hosted special guests from the Office of Cable Television, Film, Music, and Entertainment as they talked to DC SCORES Executive Director, Bethany Henderson, and some of the kids and coaches.

Of course, we also have to recognize the awesome camp sponsors District Sports, Target, and the Office of Latino Affairs, that help make camps like these a reality for D.C. kids.

For the campers, their efforts of working together as a team were tested during the most important game of the summer, the coaches vs. campers game!

No team of campers has ever won a game against the coaches, EVER, and this time was no different. Even though the coaches continue their reign as summer camp champs, the kids came close in some instances which demonstrates the teamwork they built.

The 15th Annual DC SCORES Cup lived up to its billing as the largest in the tournament's history.

With more than 10 new companies in the mix, 40 teams participated in the DC area's largest corporate charity soccer tournament and raised $170,000 in support of DC SCORES. The 40 teams was eight more than the previous record number of participating companies and law firms.

On what turned out to be a beautiful, sunny Saturday, more than 600 people of various soccer skill levels and ages played 112 soccer games across 10 fields at the Maryland SoccerPlex in Germantown, Md. The teams were split into four brackets, giving each company a catered experience.

Those into being super competitive got their wish, with Clark Construction winning the division. Grant Thornton took home the new Intermediate Division championship. Capital for Children won the Casual Division. And Arnold & Porter Kay Scholer was victorious in the first year of the Law Firms Division.

A big thank you to Subway, which sponsored lunch for the second consecutive year. DrinkMore Water provided all the hydration needed. And KRā electrolyte drinks provided free samples throughout the afternoon and cases of its replenishing beverage to the teams who pushed on to the playoffs -- playing their sixth or even seventh game.

D.C. United mascot Talon made an appearance, walking the grounds and posing for photos with the teams. And thanks to DC's Major League Soccer team -- which also brought a staff team to the Cup -- every participant received a ticket to the July 22 D.C. United game which will be preceded by a large DC SCORES tailgate, too.

From the legacy teams that have participated in every DC SCORES Cup -- Marriott, Hogan Lovells US LLP and Zuckerman Spaeder LLP -- to the new teams, the 15th version of the event was the most successful ever as DC's most prominent soccer tournament for charity continues to grow.

We look forward to 2018!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5720217032310433094.post-82486757514076946492017-06-19T11:06:00.001-04:002017-06-19T12:04:38.431-04:00Free summer camps hosted by DC SCORES!Written by Lorena Palacios

Summer SCORES has officially begun today with the first summer camp of the season!

Forty fun-filled days where DC kids get the opportunity to participate in activities that teach and promote teamwork, leadership and commitment.

This summer, DC SCORES is hosting three camps in different parts of the city starting June 19 to July 28.

The camps are FREE to all DC kids who are within the age eligibility range. This is a great opportunity for kids that are not full-year DC SCORES poet-athletes to experience one of the best summer camp experiences in the city!

During summer SCORES, our goal is to create a fun and welcoming environment for kids during the summer months that keeps their minds and bodies in good shape. All the camp activities are led by expert coaches that are trained in soccer and positive youth development. We provide all participants with a t-shirt and at least one meal every day of camp.

Our camps offer a unique opportunity for kids from all different parts of the city to come together and build long-lasting friendships!

The summer months are a critical period for low-income youth due to their lack of activity when not in school. Kids that don't have the resources to attend tradition summer camps often struggle with learning loss once classes resume.

DC SCORES offers a solution to this issue by giving kids the confidence and skills to succeed on the playing field, in the classroom, and in life.

This morning was special for DC SCORES. By the time staff members walked into the office, our social media channels were blowing up.

We had received two huge honors in a matter of minutes. Talk about starting the week off right.

The first one we knew about. For the fourth time, the Catalogue for Philanthropy chose DC SCORES for inclusion in its annual catalogue celebrating the best nonprofits in Washington, DC. We have now been picked for the catalogue all four times we've been eligible and applied.

This is a tremendous testament to our continued work with kids -- now 2,200 served annually -- in communities across the District.

...

Minutes later, the Center for Nonprofit Advancement chose DC SCORES as the winner of its 2017 Advancement in Management (AIM) Award. The AIM for Excellence Award Competition is an annual award presented to a Washington, DC metropolitan area nonprofit organization for outstanding achievement in organizational management.

This is what Susan Leon Seemann, an AIM Award Selection Committee Member, had to say about DC SCORES:

“I was blown away by the deliberate process that DC SCORES has attacked each of their deficiencies. They understand no nonprofit is perfect, embrace their imperfections, come up with a way to improve them, measure their results, and make adjustments based on the results. This is the epitome of excellence in management and what this award is about."

DC SCORES is thrilled to have received such distinguished awards and looks forward to continuing to grow and strive to serve every child in DC in need of our year-round programming.

"These are both incredible honors," said Executive Director Bethany Rubin Henderson. "They are a testament to the work our staff, board of directors, and coaches put in to make DC SCORES a model kids-serving organization in Washington, DC. We look forward to continuing our growth as a program and also from a management standpoint as we move into our 24th year in the District."

...

About DC SCORES
DC SCORES goes where kids in need are and creates neighborhood teams that give kids the confidence and skills to succeed on the playing field, in the classroom, and in life.

Vision
We envision a DC where every child – no matter their family income – experiences the joys of childhood: sports, arts, service, and being part of a team. Where every child – no matter their family circumstances – is empowered to find academic success and grow into an emotionally and physically healthy teen and adult. Where every neighborhood supports and celebrates its children and their accomplishments on and off the playing field.

Model
DC SCORES’ school-based, team-based, whole child programming — delivered through free after-school programs and summer camps facilitated by trained youth development professionals — intentionally integrates soccer, poetry, and service-learning to help low-income 3rd-8th graders throughout the District build physical fitness, find their voice, improve their literacy, increase school engagement, and strengthen ties to their community.

History
Julie Kennedy, a former teacher at Marie Reed Learning Center, invented this complementary combination of activities in 1994 when she began working with a group of 15 girls with little to do after school. Ms. Kennedy learned that the team-centered relationships built on the soccer field translated into poetry workshops, and the development of teamwork and leadership prepared students to act as agents of change in their communities through service-learning projects.

America SCORES
The program quickly expanded throughout DC, and in 1999 Kennedy began sites in Boston and Chicago, thus creating America SCORES, headquarters to 13 programs across the United States and Canada: Bay Area, Chicago, Cleveland, Denver, Los Angeles, Milwaukee, New England, New York, Portland, St. Louis, Seattle, Vancouver, and Washington, DC.

Today is Do More 24, the biggest day of giving in the DC area for more than 700 local nonprofits. This is a day to celebrate and support the hundreds of incredibly important causes in the region, and we hope you'll support DC SCORES to help us achieve our goal of $10,000 raised during 24 hours!

We're so inspired by the desire to help create change in the community from all of our DC SCORES participants. During the spring SCORES season, we've witnessed a wide variety of service-learning projects including toy making for local animal shelters, educational skits for parents, healthy lifestyle awareness campaigns, Barnard Elementary School holding a march for immigrants' rights, and many, many more!

In the final edition of our series with the Tigers, I got the chance to hear from the kids and coaches how successful Fight 4 Fitness was in their community, as well as hang out with them at Jamboree!.

During soccer practice and service-learning, there seemed to be a certain level of excitement in the air knowing that Jamboree! was only a few days away. The time the Tigers spent outside playing soccer was very free-flowing and lively, truly just playing for the love of the game. As the school year comes to an end soon, one of the second grade classes came out to practice to see what was in store for them next year as third graders when they become a part of DC SCORES.

Going into service-learning time, I was so excited to find out how their Fight 4 Fitness campaign went and check out the poster they were working on that showcased their project.

It is obvious how much these kids love to put their creative skills to use! The poster was super colorful with drawings the Tigers made of their favorite fruits and vegetables, pictures of them going out to grocery stores, and talking to their peers about the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

Their next task was to create captions for their pictures to explain what happening during that captured moment, but Coach Lee added the challenge of writing the caption in five words or fewer. It can be hard to write so little about something you love so much, but the Amidon-Bowen students crushed the challenge like always.

Everything was ready for the big day... JAMBOREE!

When I met up with the Tigers during the spring season celebration, their levels of excitement and happiness were through the roof! They were so thrilled to share their service-learning project, as well as see what the other DC SCORES teams worked on during the season.

It was such a great sight to see everyone enjoy such a truly special day. Coach Carlos, Coach Lee, and Coach Pecot looked so proud watching their team compete with other schools on the field. There was so much support from the kids as they cheered on their teammates during the games.

I will always be super grateful for the opportunity I had to work with all of the kids and the coaches that were always a pleasure to work with. My days were better whenever I had the chance to hang out at Amidon-Bowen.

There honestly could not have been a better way to wrap up spring SCORES with the Tigers. Their hard work on and off the field paid off in amazing ways by creating change in their community. Fight 4 Fitness was more than just an awareness campaign, it was the first step toward a healthier lifestyle for the rest of their lives.
DC SCORES celebrated the 22nd edition of Jamboree! on a beautiful Saturday filled with soccer, service-learning projects, and activities for the whole community.

During the course of six hours, 2,000 kids, alongside their families, gathered at Anacostia Park to celebrate the end of another successful DC SCORES spring season.

Jamboree! started early for DC SCORES staff in preparation for the exciting day ahead for everyone. Before teams started showing up, the staff arranged activity booths like face-painting and medal making, set up the fields that were going to see many, many goals throughout the day, and prepared an incredibly large group of early-rising volunteers for their tasks during the day.

As the teams arrived one by one, schools dropped off their service-learning posters to display the projects they've been working on all season.

Once setup was complete, Jamboree! officially started with the elementary school City Cup championship games. The girls from Aiton and Thomson and the boys from Aiton and Tubman set the tone for all the great games that would be played nonstop across 15 fields. By the conclusion of the championship games, the expansive grassy field was filled with teams from all eight wards in Washington, DC -- a true citywide event -- as well as hundreds of families, community members, and DC SCORES partners.

As tradition, all of the elementary schools gathered around DJ RBI for chants to represent their schools. One by one, teams yelled out enthusiastically as their schools were called out by Program Director Sean Hinkle.

The first stop for many for the kids included a picture frame booth, where the soccer stars got to showcase their crafting skills. Up next, Goldman Sachs volunteers provided more color to everyone's day with their face painting booth. There were also hundreds of books on display to choose from, as volunteers from Aronson made suggestions for the kids' summer reading lists.

In order to stay game-ready, the student-athletes had stations that kept them warmed up like relay races with members of the November Project, shooting practice with Penya Barcelonista, and some dodgeball to mix it up a bit with volunteers from Grant Thornton.

All the fun activities built an appetite for the teams and coaches, so Revolution Foods was there with healthy meals, which included sandwiches and fruits and veggies to keep those energy levels high for the whole day.

Just when things didn't seem like they could get better, the DC SCORES' teams got a surprise visit from everybody's favorite mascot, D.C. United's Talon. Families, volunteers, and of course the kids smiled from ear to ear as they snapped photos with Talon and danced to DJ RBI's beats.

As the day continued, the energy and enthusiasm never slumped for a second!

The day concluded with the middle school and co-ed championship games, where DC SCORES Executive Director Bethany Rubin Henderson presented the game finalists with well-deserved trophies and medals for all the players and coaches.

At the end of another amazing and successful Jamboree!, it's impossible not to recognize the support and efforts from all of our volunteers -- from just after sunrise until every cone and flag was picked up from the field. The poet-athletes of Amidon-Bowen were so awesome with me on my first day as an intern, so I was very excited to go back and check out the progress of their Fight 4 Fitness campaign.

As always, the Tigers started with some soccer practice in preparation for their next game day. A scrimmage between the boys and girls got their enthusiasm going and the penalty shooting drills got their minds in the right place to start working on their service-learning project.

Once practice was over, everyone split up into their committees and went right to work. This session was all about putting their plans into motion and getting ready to execute them by showcasing the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

The coaches and staff were a great resource for the kids to get organized on all the tasks they set out to complete. Mr. Keck was assisting the Marketing committee in putting up posters in the school hallways, available in English and Spanish, that highlighted healthy food proportions. Coach Pecot worked alongside the Information Desk committee to gather all the supplies they were going to handout to the student body, including water bottles, pencils, and flyers with healthy living tips. In the school cafeteria, Coach Lee assisted the Media committee in practicing their morning announcements, which included poems written by the kids.

Earlier in the week, the Tigers had worked on a PowerPoint presentation and gathered pictures showcasing specific foods and recipes the Amidon-Bowen students can start incorporating at home.

With the school year wrapping up soon, the Tigers hope to make an impact within their community by really emphasizing the importance of a healthy lifestyle by talking one-on-one with their classmates about how easy it can be to adjust our habits.

It's obvious how much this service-project has changed the kids' view on being healthy. They're all so excited about their plans and are constantly discussing their favorite fruits and vegetables (strawberries and cabbage are the top picks for each).

During my very first day as an intern at DC SCORES, I had the privilege of hanging out with the kids of Amidon-Bowen and learning about their service-project, Fight 4 Fitness.

Even though it was a bit windy outside, it was overall a great day to start off with some soccer. Coach Lee and Coach Carlos had the Tigers practicing their passes and getting used to using both of their feet. The poet-athletes then went on to have some 1v1 drills to get them warmed up for their scrimmage. These kids are seriously so skilled with the ball. During the game, one of the goalies scored from their side of the field!

After such an exciting game, everyone was in a great mood to start setting a timeline and specific tasks that are going into Fight 4 Fitness.

The Media, Marketing, and Information Desk committees each started brainstorming specific goals each group is going to put into place to accomplish their overall objectives for their project. Their four main goals are: to raise awareness about their program within their school community, inform the students about the importance of healthy eating and drinking plenty of water, remind everyone to exercise daily, and teach families how to incorporate these habits into their lives at home.

Last week, the Marketing committee put up posters in the school's hallways about healthy eating portion sizes. The Information Desk is going to share quick and easy recipes, like strawberry balsamic and spinach salad. Finally, the Media committee was gathering research about healthy facts to include in the morning announcements starting the very next day.

Did you know that the healthiest food item in the world is a lemon? I didn't know until the kids in the Media committee found that out in their research!

As always, Mr. Keck, Coach Lee, Coach Carlos, and Coach Pecot were very helpful in assisting the committees during their brainstorming and planning process.

It was such a great experience being able to spend my afternoon at Amidon-Bowen. All the coaches and kids were super welcoming and made my first day better than I could have ever imagined. I'm looking forward to going back and continue sharing their progress and results for their Fight 4 Fitness service-project.
Barnard writing coach

“Build bridges, not walls!” was a popular chant at Barnard’s immigration rally last week. For their service-learning project, the DC SCORES Barnard Bears marched to nearby Grant Circle, chanting supportive slogans and holding up their handmade signs. Students’ signs read “America is best together!” and “Love trumps hate!” Neighbors waved and clapped and cars slowed and honked as two dozen third-fifth grade students marched past. The Barnard Bears got their message across: immigrants are welcome here.

In the weeks prior to the rally, I guided the Barnard student-athletes through the service-learning process. As their service-learning coach, I was eager to see the direction they would choose to take. We began by looking closely at their community, examining its positive and negative aspects. As a class, we discussed what the students appreciate -- the friendliness of neighbors, the multiculturalism. And we discussed what they thought should change -- the amount of trash on the streets, the violence. Students focused particularly on discrimination based on race and ethnicity. Several students expressed how many of their immigrant friends and family feel scared and unwelcome as a result of the current political climate and its real-life manifestations.

We then researched and learned about the history of immigration in the United States, the immigrant communities of Washington, DC, and we read about Mayor Muriel Bowser’s new legal defense fund for undocumented immigrants. We discussed the many reasons that people immigrate to this country and shared some of our own families’ immigration stories. The DC SCORES Barnard Bears come from all over the world, from El Salvador and Nigeria, from Eritrea and Guatemala, from Mexico and beyond. Finally, the Bears voted on and chose as their project title, “Keep the American Dream Alive.”

Now it was time for action! The Barnard Bears knew they wanted to help make everyone in the community feel safe and welcome, but how exactly would they do it? The poet-athletes brainstormed and decided that they would hold a rally to show support for immigrants. They had seen protests and rallies in the news and understood that it could be an effective way to create change. Together, the class decided on their project plan -- we would choose a location and date for the rally; we would write letters to the principal and school community to tell them all about our plans; we would create posters and write speeches; and when the day of the rally came, we would document it so that we could further spread our message on social media.

Finally, rally day was here! The students lined up with their posters and began the march to Grant Circle. Once we arrived at the circle, some of the students gave mini-speeches. Dairelynn declared, “No matter where you are from, we are glad you are our neighbor!” In unison, Brian and Cordell yelled, “We support immigrants!” Cars honked in encouragement and passersby smiled and waved. I asked how the students were feeling; they felt powerful and heard. No one could deny their message.

The Bears returned to the school chanting, “Barnard welcomes everyone!”

Though I was sad to be spending my last day with the Tigers, the weather outside was beautiful and perfect for soccer.

The Amidon coaches began practice with passing drills, trying to teach the poet-athletes to move after they pass. After working on that for a while, the Tigers transitioned into a scrimmage of girls vs. boys. Afterward, all the players were in high spirits heading into service-learning class.

Since my last visit, the Tigers had made significant strides in their service-learning project. They had decided on how exactly they wanted to implement their project, Fight 4 Fitness, and had created committees that would carry out each part.

The committees were split into "Media," which would handle creating a powerpoint on healthy living to show to the student body, as well as crafting daily announcements to say over the intercom in the morning; "Marketing," the group that decides what posters they will be using and creating and where they will be hung around the school for maximized viewing; and "Information Desk," a table that will be set up during after-school hours that will give health and wellness information to students in all grades as well as parents coming to pick up their child.

The students chose what committee they wanted to be on, splitting almost perfectly into three even teams without help needed from the coaches, and got straight to work. The marketing committee, assisted by Coach Carlos, started going through all the posters they already had and designing new ones they wanted to display. The media committee chose a group leader, and then designated themselves into smaller groups to work on the powerpoint and announcements. Finally, the information desk committee gathered all the resources they had, began sorting them, and then deciding what to use.

The session was very productive, and I know Amidon-Bowen is going to have a very successful service-learning project presentation at Jamboree! June 3.

In the past five weeks, I have seen growing student involvement and excitement about their project, as well as more commitment to their team and students working together to get good results at their games. I had an awesome time getting to know the Amidon students and coaches; everyone at the school was so welcoming. They made my last weeks working at DC SCORES memorable and fun, and I can't wait to go back and visit!

Last week the Amidon-Bowen Tigers were in high spirits for programming Monday.

As usual, the poet-athletes began outside for soccer practice. Coach Lee started the practice with dribbling and footwork exercises, in the hopes of helping the students gain confidence on the field. Next, they did some 1 v 1 drills and then finished practice with a little scrimmaging. Several kids got the opportunity to try playing goalie.

Then it was service-learning time! As part of their project Fight 4 Fitness, students focused last week on either a poem, story, or play about how they have been affected by gun violence and how detrimental guns are to living in a healthy, happy community.

When coach Pecot gathered everyone together, their writing complete, the students shared with each other about how they had heard guns, seen guns, and had family members affected by guns.

Finally, the whole class, teachers included, recited a pledge against gun violence:

The Pledge

I will never bring a gun to school;

I will never use a gun to settle a personal problem or dispute;

I will use my influence with my friends to keep them from using guns to settle disputes.

My individual choices and actions, when multiplied by those of young people throughout my city, will make a difference.

Together, by honoring this pledge, we can reverse the violence and grow up in safety.

After reciting, the students all signed their pledges as a measure of accountability, and returned them to Coach Pecot. The lesson was an important one that the students will highlight in their posters for their fitness expo to wrap up their service-learning project.

What is your day job?
I’m in finance at Discovery. More specifically, our team manages the global accounting process for all programs produced by Discovery.

How did you first get involved with DC SCORES?
I found out about it through one of my best friends Jessica Rosen and Sean Hinkle (Chief Program Officer, DC SCORES). We have other friends who are involved and volunteer with DC SCORES as well! So a mixture of current staff, former staff, and friends.

Can you name some of the ways that you are involved with DC SCORES?
Obviously I volunteer at the major events, Fall Frenzy and Jamboree! I helped out at Our Words Our City this year as well. Internally, I do a lot of work to help recruit more Discovery volunteers through our finance team, and I am participating in Discovery’s Dollars for Doers program with DC SCORES this year!

Can you explain more about the Dollars for Doers initiative?
Dollars for Doers is a way for Discovery to support their employees and to encourage us to give back and contribute to our community. The program supports employees by making contributions to causes that we are passionate about. It gives us an incentive to become even more involved and make a bigger impact. If we volunteer for 30 hours over a program year to a nonprofit, Discovery will make a $3,000 donation to that organization.

How has your time with DC SCORES impacted you?
My biggest thing and what I love about DC SCORES is I love the opportunity it provides for kids. It allows kids to have something that they can do and participate in after school -- it keeps them active, which is super important to me, and it also grows their confidence. DC SCORES helps pave the way to success. It is amazing to see an 8-year-old killing it on stage at the Poetry Slam!. Volunteering with DC SCORES gives me a way to make an impact with kids in DC.

Can you share a favorite memory?
During Fall Frenzy, I signed up to volunteer and was assigned to face painting, and I thought, “Oh no, I’m an accountant,” but you all assured me that I would be fine. Well, while I was doing it, one of the moms asked me, “Woah, are you an artist??” and kids were lining up for me! That obviously made me feel great, but also all of the kids and families were so grateful and happy to be a part of the event. Doing the face painting was also amazing because it allowed me to sit and talk with each of them one-on-one, and that was really cool.

What motivates you to volunteer?
I think just giving back in general is so important for everyone. We all had help along the way in different ways and capacities. Growing up, I’ve always volunteered. You get a lot out of it and the people you are helping get a lot out of it as well. It makes the world go round, you know!

What do you do in your free time?
I like to travel, my husband is an airline pilot, so we love going to new places. I also enjoy going to see shows at different music venues, as well as exploring all of the other great things to do in DC. My husband and I are taking Spanish lessons right now, AND we recently adopted our dog, Bruno.

If you could ask your new dog one question, what would it be?
We adopted him 3 weeks ago, and he is about a year old. I wanna know what he looked like as a puppy! I would ask him to go find a photo for me because I bet he was even more adorable.

It was a dreary Monday, and there had been little stopping the drizzle all day. The Amidon-Bowen Tigers did not let that keep them from learning, though.

Instead of having practice outside, the Tigers all filed in to Coach Lee's classroom for an indoor soccer lesson. Coach Lee and Coach Carlos talked to the poet-athletes about their work and effort in practice, and how that can affect the outcome of games. Afterward, students reviewed positions and roles on the field.

Next, Coach Lee stepped up the indoor practice by taking the students upstairs to run laps with the track team. After 6-8 laps, the students were red-faced, breathing heavily and ready to begin service-learning.

---------------

Once settled with Coach Pecot, the service-learning lesson began; they were covering the process of creating and using surveys. First, Coach Pecot wrote a survey about smoking on the board for the students to complete. After practicing answering questions, the students brainstormed, in small groups, questions that they could ask their school community regarding their health habits.

The coaches encouraged the students to think outside of yes or no questions. Some students created questions that had answers from strongly agree to strongly disagree. Others thought free response questions could give them more information on the respondent.

One student, Ryan J., told me he wanted to ask, "Do you like junk food? Do you want to stay healthy? When you eat do you have all 5 food groups on your plate?" He thought that people would be more likely to take the survey and finish it if the questions had yes or no answers.

By the end of the session, the students had made great progress in determining the best way to gauge community members' attitudes about healthy living and how they can encourage fitness for all. Fight 4 Fitness is well on its way to being a very successful service-learning project!

Amidon-Bowen is charging straight into a tough service-learning project this season. Entitled Fight 4 Fitness, the project supports healthy living.

The Tigers actively completed the 'preparation and decision making' workshops that are imperative to a successful service learning project. During their workshops they learned the ground rules to and reasons for service-learning, as well as identified what issue they wanted to tackle for a project.

Choosing their school community as a home base, Amidon poet-athletes decided that they wanted to try and live healthier lifestyles, and help others achieve this goal as well.

Daniel, a 4th grader, said "We're going to be talking to our classmates, peers, and teachers."

When I visited Amidon, they were just beginning the 'research and planning' phase of service-learning. The students were brainstorming ideas for how they could get the word out about the project. Some ideas were posters, intercom announcements, and assemblies. As for their own lifestyles, the students created four goals that they all wanted to achieve during the season.

Makayla told me all about them. "Our first goal is to drink more water, our second goal is to eat more healthy foods, our third goal is to work out more...and our fourth goal is to eat foods that will kind of help our brains and make us smarter," she said. The Tigers have not yet created a plan to keep themselves accountable for this mission.

Though they are a brand-new program, Amidon-Bowen Elementary School has thrived using the DC SCORES model their first year combining soccer, poetry, and service-learning.

This season is Amidon's second spring implementing the program. The Tigers became a DC SCORES school in October 2015 when D.C. United's United Soccer Club program merged with DC SCORES. The partnership melded DC SCORES’ robust curriculum and proven success with D.C. United’s name recognition and soccer resources. Because of Amidon-Bowen's close proximity to D.C. United's home in Southwest (especially to United's new stadium coming in 2018), the school and its soccer team are especially important to the club and are often chosen for fun opportunities, such as tickets to games and training from players.

There are three coaches at Amidon: Carlos Granados, soccer; Kenisha Pecot, writing; and LeeVon Floyd, soccer and writing. Amdion has soccer followed by poetry/service-learning programming on the same days, and all three coaches are very involved in both aspects and build off each other's lessons. From just my first day at the school, it was obvious that the coaches are admired by the students, and it was noticeable that all three commanded a great amount of respect, no small accomplishment after a long school day. The Amidon poet-athletes were all happy to be at practice, and there were no complaints when the session transitioned from soccer to service learning.

"Poetry allows me to interact with students that I do not have the opportunity to see and also bond and build relationships," said coach Pecot.

Coach Carlos commented to me that in just the past two years, "Some of the kids have improved academically, so when it comes to reading out loud or writing, they have (really) improved. They don't have stage fright anymore, and it just comes more naturally for them."

Amidon-Bowen has adapted extremely well to the full DC SCORES curriculum, and has quickly become a part of the school and greater community. Now, the Tigers are ready to make a difference in their school community.

Stay tuned as we document their service-learning project this spring.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5720217032310433094.post-55192723869717420562017-04-19T11:11:00.000-04:002017-12-15T15:04:31.522-05:00Alumni Tournament 2017: Intense competition with old friends
The mood was high as the almost 200 DC SCORES alumni flooded into the Tubman Elementary School field.

Tuesday marked the 7th annual DC SCORES Alumni Tournament, an event held for former participants of the program to play with their old teammates and competitors.

Students created teams of about 11 to play small-sided 6 v 6 games in intense competition. The competition didn't keep students from smiling and hugging all their old friends, though!

The games were played World Cup style: 4 groups of 4 teams played round robin for the first matches, then there were semi-finals, quarter-finals, and a final. Even when teams didn't make it to semi-finals, they stayed to watch the end of the tournament and cheer on their peers.

One could tell that the alumni of DC SCORES love soccer. Seeing the skill level of the graduates of the program is almost unbelievable, especially when you know that some of these students had never played soccer before playing with DC SCORES.

In between games, I grabbed some alumni to talk to them about their DC SCORES experiences and what they are up to now:

A current high school senior, Eduardo, told me that DC SCORES was his first exposure to soccer, "DC SCORES helped me find a love for the game and figure out what I really wanted to do." He and his teammate Ibrahim, also a DCS alum, are planning to play college soccer at West Virginia Wesleyan College next fall.

Stephanie Cruz, an alumni who now attends Trinity Washington University, told me, "DC SCORES helped me build my leadership up and my sportsmanship and really taught me how to work and play with a team." Her sister, Jocelyn, said "A big thing [for me] was getting out of my comfort zone and trying new things."

After lots of hard-fought games, The Hollow Squad was victorious and they were named Alumni Tournament Champions. The winners were given Chipotle gift cards, and both finalists received tickets to an upcoming D.C. United match.

All in all, the event was a huge success. It brought old friends back together and reconnected them through the sport they all love. Thanks to Greta, Coach Popsie, and our sponsors for helping make the day as enjoyable as it could be for our poet-athletes. As our alumni network continues to grow, so will Alumni Tournament, and we can't wait!
DC SCORES intern

When I went to Barnard Elementary School with coach Hannah, it was my first time at Barnard and also my first time as a coach in DC SCORES. It was a great experience!

As Hanna started class, the kids were all really interested in what she was saying. She introduced me to all the kids, and they were very surprised to learn that I was Mexican like many of them. They immediately began asking me questions about soccer and soccer players and all that stuff. But then they pivoted, as we all worked together to understand the meaning of a poem presented to the group.

Barnard was still in the first phase of service-learning, which involves examining your school community and what needs to be improved. I was really impressed with how aware the Barnard Bears were of what was around them and the problems in their neighborhood.

There was only so much we could do in the classroom. After a lively question-and-answer session, we move outside to truly examine the school’s surroundings. We started with the cafeteria, then moved to the gym, then outside. The kids walked up and down the sidewalks, jotting observations in their notebooks. Was there trash strewn everywhere? Did certain areas need beautifying? The kids logged it all.

Upon returning to the classroom, the kids raised their hands to let Hannah know what they’d seen. But then we dug deeper. OK, there were issues. But how could they be addressed? How could we create change? As the service-learning session wrapped up, Hannah gave the Barnard poet-athletes a homework assignment — think about a social project and how you would enact it. Obviously the team’s service-learning project will take many more group sessions, but it was a really good start. It was a dynamic, deep and understanding class. I was happy to be a part of it!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5720217032310433094.post-51896486257148784462017-03-15T12:08:00.001-04:002017-03-16T09:56:50.947-04:00Volunteer spotlight: Kathy Jacquart, soccer referee

DC SCORES has more than 500 volunteers who help make our program possible for 2,200 low-income DC kids. From assistant coaching, to tackling our big events, to providing expert services and advice, to folding newsletters in our office, to reffing weekly soccer games, to taking photos and videos, and much more, our volunteers make a difference in many ways and with varying schedules.

Today we highlight a volunteer, Kathy Jacquart, who has been refereeing soccer games for us since 2010 and loves the interactions she has with the kids each week during the fall and spring seasons. Get to know Kathy below, and if you'd like to referee games this spring, sign up HERE!

What is your day job?
I work at the National Science Foundation, specifically supporting the National Science Board, which governs and sets policies for the agency. The National Science Foundation is the primary funder of basic scientific, non-health research. We mostly fund university research, but also some STEM K-12 programs as well.

How long have you been volunteering with DC SCORES?
I started reffing games in 2013.

How did you first get involved with DC SCORES?
I think that it was VolunteerMatch online. I just was searching through the opportunities and reached out. I had been overseas doing international development work and wanted to settle back into DC and find somewhere to volunteer.

Do you have a soccer background?
Yeah, I played 4th-9th or 10th grade and in college on intramural teams. My dad coached and all of my siblings played. I wasn’t all that good, but it was my first team sport and I’ve always loved it.

I heard an interesting tidbit about how you get to and from your referee sites -- are you an avid cyclist?
I mostly bike for transportation -- I’ve always biked both recreationally and for transportation. This past year with the metro situation, I started biking to work a few days a week. My boss is an avid cyclist and sold me a really nice bike, which makes the commute much more pleasant. So I am not some hardcore cyclist, but I ride a few days to work and for fun.

How has your time with DC SCORES impacted you?
Well, I don’t usually have a lot of interaction with kids. I don’t have kids myself, and my nieces and nephews don’t live in the area. As I mentioned, my dad coached for many, many years. I didn’t realize the kind of impact that had on him until much later. Inspired by that, I wanted to try to work with kids in some way. I don’t really have enough time to coach, but I wanted to help out somehow.

I really like the elementary kids -- they are so cute! I’ve refereed at some of the same sites for years and have seen them really improve from year to year. They are really sweet kids. It’s so much fun to see them have a good time and watch the coaches interact with them.

"It’s not just about the soccer, but really about sportsmanship and having fun. Even though I am only involved with DC SCORES as a referee, I can just tell and see what a great program it is. Refereeing is a fun opportunity for me to have a little interaction with kids and contribute in a small way to a really great program. I have a great time and feel good about it!"

Do you have a favorite DC SCORES memory?
The biggest thing has been seeing the improvement from season to season. Especially last fall -- a lot of the kids that I remembered from the spring had made remarkable improvements in their skills and understanding of the game.

One specific memory: one game a couple of years ago, there was a a little girl that was really funny, she was a real character. There was a bit of a scuffle on the field, I think someone got pushed. I was trying to get everyone to shake it off and make sure the kids were all okay. I heard the little girl say to her teammate, “When they go low, you go high." I thought that was amazing coming from a young girl -- she really understood the point of being a good sport.

What do you like to do in your free time?
I like to get out and do stuff outside as much as possible. I am on a rowing team at the Capital Rowing Club and I’ve rowed since college. Unfortunately, now I am on a senior weekend program, but there are people of all ages -- we will get back out on the water in a couple of weeks.

I love exploring new places, which is something great about living in DC. There are so many things to see and places to see in DC and in the surrounding area. My husband and I do a lot of exploring and hiking on the weekends.

What is your dream vacation?
I’ve lived overseas for almost 15 years and have done a ton of traveling and been to some really cool places, but really my favorite vacation spot is a little beach in Rhode Island called Briggs Beach. My family has been going there since my grandmother was a little girl, and there is a 25-year waiting list to get a membership. It is so serene and there's something special about it. I go there and just feel the stress melt away. I really would trade any other beautiful vacation spot for this little beach in Rhode Island.

If you had a superpower, what would it be?
You know, my husband is really into Science Fiction and I’m sure he would have an immediate list of his top 10 superpowers. Hmmm. I think that it would be to make sure that everyone is fed. I would want to be able to make sure that no one is going to bed with a hungry tummy. Service-learning is a integral part of the DC SCORES curriculum, and we're always excited when spring rolls around and students begin their projects. To kick off the new season we've compiled some of our best service-learning stories and videos to give you an idea of what students will be tackling this spring.
Last spring, Imagine Hope Tolson took advantage of their school-wide recycling program by saving bottles and creating a garden out of them. Students cut the bottles and filled them with soil and flowers to add some greenery to their school which is surrounded by asphalt. They also walked around the community and cleaned up several blocks. Imagine Hope students were joined in service by, among others, sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade alumni who had stayed connected to the program through coach Jerome Clemons and the Classroom Champions nonprofit that he also ran at the school; Steve Mesler, the head of Classroom Champions, and dozens of Olympic athletes from the Team USA Athletes Advisory Council; James Cole Jr., the Deputy Secretary of the U.S. Department of Education; and a U.S. Senator, Adrian Smith of Nebraska.

“Literally, you can turn any space or any item possibly into a little green outside garden,” Clemons said.
In 2014 the Raymond Tigers successfully held a Healthy Living Carnival for their peers. The students split into committees, each of which planned and executed a booth. Committees taught students to work as a team to complete their project. The carnival was a success and students had a great time running their own booths.
The Truesdell Trojans took on cleaning up the trash in their school buildings for their 2015 service project. Like Raymond, they used the committee method to approach their project. They also made their project into a school-wide competition by offering a prize to whichever class picked up the most trash in their hallway.

Thomson Elementary School students used the research portion of service-learning to find out about hunger in Washington D.C. When they realized that 1 in 3 kids in D.C. doesn't have enough food, they decided to try and help solve this problem. Students created bags of trail mix to donate to D.C. Central Kitchen to give hungry children the right nutrients to help them succeed. They didn't stop there, though. Thomson students also wrote letters to DC councilmembers about the issue.

H.D. Cooke began its service-learning process by looking at what would be beneficial to their community. Some students wrote down trash, while others saw homelessness as an issue plaguing their community. The Bulls visited Martha's Table to learn more about their issue and to get ideas on how they could tackle it. The students were able to reflect on the experience after, and many felt empowered by being able to help people.
Communications Intern

In honor of International Women's Day, we're sharing some of our favorite stories and poems from an incredible group of DC SCORES young women. These are just a handful of the thousands of girls who find their voices, their power, and their sense of belonging through DC SCORES.

1. Alumna Ingrid Melendez

Ingrid Melendez was a DC SCORES student at Tubman Elementary School and Lincoln Middle School. She met some of her best friends playing at Lincoln as well as a coach, Asa, who served as a mentor and life coach during Ingrid's most difficult years. After aging out of DC SCORES, Ingrid stayed involved and worked for four consecutive summers at Marie Reed Elementary as a Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) counselor. After overcoming great obstacles during her high school years, Ingrid headed to college in the fall of 2015 -- the first from her family to attend college. Through all of her hardship, Ingrid found an outlet in playing soccer.
On her time as a summer coach: “I always tell them it doesn’t matter if you’re a girl,” Ingrid said. “A girl can do anything a guy can do.”

Kelly Miller Middle School poet-athlete, 11 years old

"Yes, I understand that I may have some ups and downs, but all people do/ But the fact that I'm black and I'm a girl makes it even harder too. These are the things you don't know about me/ I'm smart, intelligent, wise, strong and also pretty"

Claudia Umaña participated in DC SCORES at Bancroft Elementary School. With her mother working to support the family, Claudia was tasked with taking care of her younger brother, and so encouraged him to join SCORES as well. Claudia went on to play soccer in high school, and became not only the first high school, but also college graduate in her family. Her brother followed in her footsteps as well. Claudia went on to work for the nonprofit Women's Policy to create opportunities for women and girls in sports and other areas. “I take a great amount of pride because that means these girls are being active but also being treated equally and taking advantage of sports in general that maybe before —even before my generation — (they) could not,” Claudia said recently.

Nijah Armstrong scored a goal in her first DC SCORES game with the Burrville Eagles. After playing for one year with the Tigers, Nijah played for a year at Kelly Miller Middle School, though she never forgot her time at Burrville. Nijah went on to graduate high school and attend North Carolina A&T State, where she double majored in forensic science and psychology. She hasn’t played much since that year, but Nijah carried the lessons instilled in her by the Burrville coaches to where she is today. “They taught me never to quit even if it’s tough -- life in general and in sports,” Nijah said.

As a DC SCORES poet-athlete, Myiah attended Burrville Elementary School. She is now a student at Georgetown University, and performed at the Our Words Our City poetry showcase earlier this year. Myiah embodies the confidence and passion DC SCORES fosters, and thinks that one of the best things in life is working with young minds to create.

8. Alumna Ana Galeas

Ana Galeas joined DC SCORES to play soccer, but in doing so found confidence and a voice that she has used in multiple avenues. After playing for three years in elementary school and in her final year at Lincoln Middle School, Ana kept lasting connections to her team and coach which led to her becoming the assistant coach at Lincoln, as well as a summer camp coach during her high school years. With each year of coaching, Ana’s confidence rose along with others’ trust in her. She became a strong leader and advocate for her team. In May 2015, she spoke on a President’s Council on Fitness panel about her DC SCORES experience, and in 2016 she spoke about the program in front of 150 people at a Brookings Institute event. “Continue to not stop and to never look back,” Ana tells her summer campers. “The more things you’ll do, the more you’ll be happy about yourself.”

Our hometown team and DC SCORES partner D.C. United has officially broken ground on their brand-new soccer stadium, Audi Field.

While the list of speakers at Monday's groundbreaking included some DCU stars, it also featured our very own Amidon-Bowen poet-athletes as the afternoon's opening act. The three students, Laura, Daniel, and Martin, performed their poem, "All This and All That I Hear About Soccer," for the large crowd. The poem featured lines such as "Because we use our skills to score goals," "I have fun by supporting my team," and "DC SCORES united as one!" The performance garnered laughs and a thunderous applause from the fans at the event.

DC SCORES Executive Director Bethany Rubin Henderson also spoke to the crowd about the partnership between D.C. United and DC SCORES. Following Bethany, emcee and the voice of D.C. United Dave Johnson took the stage to introduce a plethora of other special guests.

The first speaker was Jason Levien, a Managing Partner of D.C. United. Levien is a long-time DCU fan and spoke to the crowd about how our community has been anxiously awaiting this stadium. Then, talking about how our city can unite around soccer, Levien said, "We're building a house of worship for soccer in this city."

The next speaker was District Mayor Muriel Bowser. She told the attendees about her excitement for the partnership between D.C. United and the community, and how the new stadium would pave the way for jobs and economic opportunity in the area. "World class cities have world class sports teams and facilities," Bowser said. "I wanted to make sure that this team was here to stay with us and that they were going to continue to invest in Washington D.C. and the best fans anywhere in the world."

The list of speakers afterwords was star-studded: Don Garber, the MLS Commissioner; Scott Keogh, Audi of America President; and of course D.C. United head coach Ben Olsen, who talked about what the new field meant to him as a former DCU player.

The audience was excited to hear from D.C. native and D.C. United goalkeeper Bill Hamid, who touched on his experiences as a child going to games in RFK stadium. "I hope Audi Field can give generations of young boys and girls the motivation RFK gave me to go after my dreams," he said.

D.C. Ward 6 Councilmember Charles Allen also spoke. Allen talked, like the mayor, about how the new field will benefit the community, but gave a specific shoutout to two of our DCS schools, Amidon-Bowen and Jefferson Middle School!

After all the speakers, it was finally time to officially break ground. The star-studded cast all grabbed their hard hats emblazoned with the D.C. United logo and shovels that read "Audi Field" in red and white. Johnson directed them all to stick their shovels in a trough of dirt that sat in front of them, and then the picture-taking began.

Going to the ceremony was such a cool experience, and we're all very excited for the 2018 opening of Audi Field. Vamos United!
