Highlighting our youth poets: MacFarland Middle School

NOTE: Each week, we are featuring a school's performance from the 13th Annual Poetry Slam! During the two-night event, each of the 25 schools DC SCORES serves got the chance to perform original poems and songs.

Wearing identical lime-green MacFarland Middle School soccer shirts, black soccer shorts and socks, the Golden Mic trophy winner for middle schools performed three songs:

"Lose the Fear," "Love Song," and "Pass You the Ball."

The students wrote "Pass You the Ball" with the help of acclaimed Philadelphia band The Great Unknown as part of the ASCAP Songwriter Residency @ America SCORES.

They got the opportunity to record it in a studio with the band, then practiced it on their own for six weeks before taking the stage Dec. 1, 2010.

Check it out.
