One of the things DC SCORES prides itself on is connecting students from different parts of Washington, DC, by way of our weekly game days during the fall and spring and quartet of summer camps.
Through these experiences, students who might rarely leave their neighborhoods get to see different parts of the city and other cultures, and often develop friendships and understandings of others in our program.
Tomorrow, this will be taken to an extreme when a group of 30 DC SCORES summer camp participants hop on a bus and travel to the Maryland SoccerPlex for the G.O. Global Kick-Off Fundraiser.
On the same field used by the Washington Spirit of the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL), the middle school students will mix into teams with kids from MSI Soccer. Their coaches?
Oh, you know...
DeMarcus Beasley.
Maurice Edu.
Ali Krieger.
More famous athletes.
And Oguchi Onyewu -- a pretty good pro, himself! -- who is the Founder and Chair of the Board for G.O. Global, "a non-profit organization that empower young people through the promotion of health, fitness, and wellness in their daily lives."
The DC SCORES students won't just receive instruction from the prominent list of soccer stars -- men and women, past and present. They'll also get to watch them play during an intermission for the youth players; they'll get autographs and giveaways; and they'll feel like, with spectators in the stands, they're playing in a real game!
The anticipation has been building all week at DC SCORES summer camp. When Coach Carlos announced some of the names -- Eddie Pope and Tony Sanneh, formerly of the U.S. Men's National Team; Josh Freeman and Graham Gano of the NFL -- campers' grins grew wide. Tomorrow, they'll meet these current and former stars, learn lessons about teamwork and leadership, and leave the Maryland SoccerPlex with autographs and an afternoon full of memories.
