How long have you been with DC SCORES?

Brammer: 3 years
Jones: 9 years

What’s your other job within or outside the school?

Brammer: Spanish teacher
Jones: Math teacher

How did you get into education or start working with youth?

Brammer: Other teacher friends said they thought I would enjoy it and be good at it.
Jones: I participated in Teach for America.

Why did you choose to work for DC SCORES; what attracted you to the program?

Brammer: The fact that our elementary school would then have a sports team. We still don’t have any others, and giving students the opportunity to be on a team is major!

Jones: I grew up playing soccer, and now my main goal is closing the achievement gap. DC SCORES is so well organized; it was a no-brainer for me. Bringing soccer to the inner-city is a must.

Now that you’ve been doing it for a while, what do you enjoy most about it?

Brammer: For me, playing soccer with the kids and seeing the joy that they get from playing, and it gives opportunities to teach other cultures. I mean, soccer is a culture in itself.

Jones: I like seeing the way kids progress in the game. It’s also great seeing the support from the school, the teachers, the community, everyone coming out to the pitch.

Was there an experience you had growing up that pushed you into education or toward doing a program like DC SCORES? Were you in a similar program?

Jones: Club soccer.

Brammer: We couldn’t start soccer until sixth grade, so for me, having an elementary school team is the best part. Building skills and interest now at a younger age going forward, I wish we had that!

What’s your favorite DC SCORES event?

Jones: Jamboree!
Brammer: Poetry Slam!

What’s your most memorable DC SCORES experience?

Brammer: I’d been working with (poet-athlete) Eric all week on using his left foot, then on game day, he dribbled down the field with his left and then went ahead and shot and scored with his left!

Jones: (Poet-athlete) Levin did a cartwheel on stage when we won at the Poetry Slam! and almost knocked over one of the judges. I’ll never forget that!

Who is your favorite athlete?

Jones: (Diego) Maradona or Allen Iverson.
Brammer: (Zinedine) Zidane.

Who is your favorite singer or poet?

Jones: Nora Jones and right now Adele.
Brammer: TENOR SAW!

What is your favorite food?

Jones: Pasta.
Brammer: Anything curried!
