DC SCORES 'one of the best small charities in Washington'

DC SCORES received a prestigious honor this week when we were featured in the Catalogue for Philanthropy as “one of the best small charities in the Washington, DC region.”

This year is the second time we’ve been selected for the Catalogue.  We also were featured in 2004 and recently, previous featured organizations were invited to apply again.

We were given a full page in this year’s Human Services section, with a picture of our Brightwood Education Center soccer players showcased above a description of our organization.

The Catalogue for Philanthropy debuted in 2003 and has since helped raise more than $9.6 million from new donors for the nonprofits featured within its pages.  Ninety reviewers from many circles as well as the DC government evaluate applicants based on “distinction, merit, and impact.”  It was developed by the Harman Family Foundation, with assistance from founding partners (and long-time DC SCORES supporters) the Meyer Foundation and the Morris and Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation.

On the catalogue’s website, Julie Rogers, the president of the Meyer Foundation, sums up what the catalogue does: “It is essential that we shine a light on the best and brightest nonprofit leaders, especially now when many of the people they serve are in desperate straits.”

It is our hope that being included in such a respected publication will directly help us continue to serve our DC SCORES poet-athletes to the best of our ability and with the resources they deserve.
