DC SCORES students garden with Michelle Obama

While there were no games this week due to DCPS students having Thursday afternoon and Friday off, a few DC SCORES Bancroft Elementary School poet-athletes made the most of their time outside the classroom.

A group of Bancroft students joined First Lady Michelle Obama Thursday to harvest vegetables from the White House garden.

Students harvested huge sweet potatoes -- seriously, one of them could feed three people -- broccoli, carrots and other veggies with the assistance of the adroit First Lady, who is using the garden to increase awareness about healthy eating.

It wasn't the first time the students had joined her at the garden, either. Obama originally researched schools with an interest in gardening, and when she found Bancroft to be one of those schools she paid a visit.

Then the student group visited the White House garden in March and June to help her prepare the soil and plant the fine veggies, which were donated Thursday to Miriam's Kitchen -- which provides nutritional meals to DC's homeless.

Check out a description, video and several fine pictures of the afternoon, featuring outstanding DC SCORES poet-athlete-gardeners.
