DC SCORES Holiday Classic Presented by District Sports is Saturday

Get your gloves, hats and long johns ready, because it’s almost time for the DC SCORES Holiday Classic Presented by District Sports. Yes, an outdoor soccer tournament in December.

The 12-team round-robin tournament will begin at 8 a.m. Saturday morning at Cardozo Senior High School and continue until a winner is crowned just as darkness is setting in. Just like with the DC SCORES Cup each summer, 100 percent of the tournament’s proceeds will directly support the 800 poet-athletes we serve.

There is no way we could have put this together without the assistance of Alex Bearman, the head of District Sports – the main recreational soccer organization in the DC -- who spearheaded recruiting efforts. The field of 12 teams filled up in less than two weeks. Alex also secured Cardozo, where the football field will be split into two 7v7 fields 55 yards in length.

The tournament also wouldn’t be possible without the generous support of Duffy’s Irish Pub, which is the official bar sponsor. Duffy’s is opening early for us at 12 p.m. so that players can head over for a plate of the bar’s award-winning wings and a cold – or warm – drink. Duffy’s is providing drink tickets for every participant as well as drink and food specials throughout the afternoon.
D.C. United will also be on hand at Duffy’s, giving away United gear and running a raffle for a mystery grand prize.

It should be a great event – both at the fields and at the bar. And did I mention that the forecast calls for a high of 45? Warm weather, indeed.

WHEN: Saturday, Dec. 11, 8 a.m.
